The following day, Darla found herself pacing in her living room trying not to be distracted by the horrible carpet that had recently come into her life. After a flooding incident, her landlord had replaced the living room carpet with pink shag carpet. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the carpet had green polka dots scattered all over it. But surprisingly, the horrid color was not the biggest stresser in her life at the moment. Instead, it was what to do with the phone she’d found at the crime scene.

The phone obviously belonged to her sister. That much she could not deny. When they’d left the event location the night before, Keely had even commented that her phone was missing. Turning it over to the police was bound to point them in Keely’s direction. Darla hesitated to do that, but what if Keely was the culprit? Should she confront Keely about the phone? What would she do if Keely admitted that it was hers? Heck, what would she do if Keely confessed to pushing Laurence? And what would the police say if she admitted to taking evidence from the crime scene?

Just when Darla was about to enter into full-blown panic mode over the situation, the phone started ringing. She yelped and darted over to the kitchen counter where she’d left the phone. Much to Darla’s surprise, the name Octavia flashed across the screen.

Don’t answer it, she told herself, but it was as though her arm had a mind of its own. In a flash, she snatched up the phone, bringing it up to her ear. “Hello?”

“Keely, just so you know, I think you ought to be ashamed of yourself! Adeline is devastated—she lost her future husband last night, and you know what? Life is short. Because of you, she spent the last year apart from Laurence when she could have been spending that time with him. It’s all your fault, you stupid—”

“Whoa, slow down,” Darla said quickly. “Octavia, this isn’t Keely. She left her phone at the event last night. This is her sister, Darla.”

There was a long pause before Octavia spoke again. “Oh. I’m sorry,” she mumbled, clearly embarrassed by her frantic shouting. “I’m just a little stirred up today.”

“I think what happened last night has everyone a little rattled,” Darla said. She started to end the conversation, but she was curious to know more about what Octavia said. “Are you… busy?”

“Pardon?”

“Are you busy?” Darla questioned. “I was hoping I could talk to someone… about what happened with Keely and Laurence.”

“Oh… I don’t know about that…”

“I’ll buy you lunch,” Darla offered.

There was another long pause, followed by a heavy sigh. “Okay,” she said. “I can meet you at the café on Main.”

“That sounds perfect,” Darla said. “Twenty minutes?”

“Sure.”

Darla hung up Keely’s phone and hurried out the door. Both of her food trucks were parked in the driveway. She glanced at the fish and chips truck and shook her head. It looked terrible with the roof dented in. It was going to need a trip to the mechanic shop before it could be out in the field again.
